About Me

My blog is about our life after MORTGAGE FREEDOM (achieved Oct 2012), saving hard for TRAVEL EXPERIENCES and EARLY RETIREMENT from my job as a teacher. I also have an ULTIMATE LIFE LIST (which works like a Bucket List)of dream travel destinations and experiences. Please leave a comment if you can. I love reading them! A little about me! I am so grateful for the life I’ve been given. I don’t need ‘things’ to be happy. I appreciate my family, friends and the value of experiences over the materialistic. By respecting the power of money and using it wisely we have had a beautiful, simple wedding and bought a tiny cottage with some land overlooking fields. We try to live simply and appreciate the beauty of the nature around us. But we have an adventurous side too. I met Mr SFT whilst travelling in Cambodia. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR STOPPING BY!

    1. Hi Nic,

As long as we put something in the pot each week, that's all that matters. 40 weeks to go-we've got loads of time.

  2. A good week for the pot, 5 x £2 coins and two handfuls of change. Next to it is an old sweet jar slowly filling up with copper coins and I will add this to the total when I count up. No money to savings this week as the water bill slid through the letterbox today. Will do better next week, I could pay half the bill and save some but would rather pay off the whole amount.

    1. Well done Pam! I'm so impressed with how many £2 coins you keep finding.

I also have a pot for my copper coins but these usually get used up when I play cards with my family at Christmas time.

  3. My name is Jane, and I have a confession to make.
We opened our loonie bin to check how many pennies we had (remember they are now out of circulation)...I accidentally counted the contents!
$27... which is more than we had hoped we'd collect for the whole year!
We've changed our minds about our goal. The loonie bin contents are now going to be deposited into a tax free saving account...for our retirement.

    1. Oh Jane, it's such a temptation to count the contents isn't it!

I'm thrilled at how much you've saved so far and I'll change your goal-tax free saving account.

  4. I had another good week on ebay, but it all went towards the new internal doors and timber for the hallway, so the virtual pot went hungry. Coppers and 5ps went into the actual pot. It was worth not feeding the virtual pot to see the staircase done - J has handmade all the spindles and it looks amazing!

  7. Nothing for me as I only have $20 notes in my purse this week and I cannot sacrifice one for my tin. I used most of my coins at the Show yesterday on the chocolate wheel as I see this as a donation to the Lions Club running it. I am pleased to report I won a large cake of chocolate!! Of course it would have been cheaper to buy it at the shop LOL!

Following my comment on yesterdays post LOL I think I must have conjured up my 'people' as they came to visit and surprise surprise they wanted something (big rolling of the eyes). They are so predictable, only phone or visit when they want something, I long ago learnt it wasn't because they wanted to see or talk to me!

    1. Hi S,

Giving to charity is always worthwhile. Good for you wining that cake too.

You need to give me some lessons about how to deal with my people! It's all about the material and dramas for them and my parents raised me not to care about that. So we were never going to see eye to eye.

    2. It's always a rude awakening when you realise that your family don't behave as you expect them to. I worked through it a few years back and have been 'seeing' things with my annoying people, unfortunately the husband has recently been on the receiving end from them and he was quite hurt by it all.

Just stay firm and stand your ground. No means NO - that's the one I've had the biggest challenges with as they then try and sweet talk me round so I will do what they want, but I just stick to my guns ever so politely and it does work. Now I just have to master not feeling guilty about it! They have no trouble letting me down.

There is never a good time to say no to my lot, if you say at the beginning it's not good. If you say it part way through when you've had enough it's not good either. No matter how much you give it is not enough and they will always want more. Anyway I digress......

You and I are a similar age and I assume Mr SFT is similar also. We are all adults and just as entitled to make our own decisions and run our own lives as we see fit - I told my MIL this recently!

On the other hand my own mother sounds more like your lot, full of dramas, but not so materialistic unless you count ALL the clothes & shoes. Over the last three or so years I have made quite a point of not participating in her drama filled negative conversations where she has an opinion on everyone and what's wrong with them. It is starting to work and she does not really talk like that around me any more. I haven't been rude (as much as would have liked to have been at times!) but in some cases I would say things like "if that's how they choose to live their lives that's fine by me because it doesn't affect me".

I am constantly amazed how family members - lets say parents - hold their adult children to ransom. They are supposed to love us, but yet they don't seem to acknowledge us as grown up's who have lives of their own. It seems to me that as long as they are getting what they want they are happy. My very own mother had a go at getting me to sign away any inheritance three years ago. I was shocked at this and she is jolly lucky I still speak to her and to make it worse the first I heard about it was from her lawyers office as she'd been in to arrange it. The poor woman on the phone genuinely thought I would have known about it. I didn't sign as per the legal advice I received. I'm still blown away by it really.

      Good luck & stay strong!

  9. I went to weigh my pots and the scales are missing. I have looked high and low. However I am not letting this deter me. I went to the fruit shop and weighed them there. Their scales would be far more accurate. Just as well we have used the same green grocer all my life.

The Queen Mary pot is now 103 g heavier and weighs in at 560 g. I know I have stuffed in a few five dollar notes and mum needed ten dollars so I gave her a note and she gave me change. It went straight to the pot.

The Sydney pot increased by 316 g to 2095g . It now weighs more than my second child did at birth.

My finances have taken a beating this month. On Monday I had a filling fall out while drinking soup. My vent is that it went in three months ago and the dentist charged me to fix it!!!!! If I am lucky I will be able to scrap together less than $30 for the saving account. This is far short of my goal. Next month I will try much harder. I guess I should take the view if I get anything in it is far better than taking stuff out.

Keep up the great work everyone.

      Lovely to hear from you!

It's good to have a system like that. Mr Sft puts in anything less than 50p, as well as the occasional £ etc..

I put all my 5ps in our china hen to save up for eggs and all of our copper coins in a tub ready for playing cards with my family at Christmas.

Yes, thanks for featuring it! I'm not going to smash it at the end of the year, think I'll be reusing this one for future sealed pot challenges :)

Had a good week so far - it hasn't been great for the pot as its the week before payday so I'm using every last penny, but...on Thursday I get paid so everything left in my wallet will go in, plus this afternoon I found a shiny £2 coin outside a shop - the first time I've ever found a £2 coin on the street! xx

  18. Checking in late again this week. I have been ever so busy with my reno job, it's not a very good excuse, but one I am going to give anyway.
My sealed pot became unsealed--oops--as I had to have some change, but I have managed to put it back in. February is almost over and March will bring a re-newed effort to contibute more to my pot.
Once I get a bit more organized I will send you a picture of my pot.

  19. A late check-in for me as well after not stopping by at all last week. My 'puter was in the shop for TLC for a few days. All better now. :) I did drop change into the SP both weeks, not sure how much but my estimate is $15. My budget for March kicks in today... just the way my income for the month starts.... and I have included a set amount for the pot this month.

Good wishes to all savers. Examine each purchase. As you linger at the door to the coffee shop, ask "do I really need that coffee now or could I wait and make it for pennies at home and put the saved cash into the pot?" =0)

  20. Hi, all. Sorry I'm so late; lots going on here just now. Anyway, I was going to put in $20 to cover losing one pound again, plus $4 lottery win, plus a few pennies I found (just two or three) plus a donation 'cause I want to make it worth my while when we open up the pots! Oh, and a few dollars 'cause I bought a fancy coffee for myself and a friend from where I used to work.

But THEN . . . (no hitting, ok?) ... I've been sorting stuff and re-packing and all that, as some of you know. As I was going through some Christmas cards I noticed a handmade one from my sister. I opened it to see what she had written; it was from Christmas 2011. Guess what??? (here I thought of making you wait for Sunday, but I figured I WOULD have things thrown at me then) . . . tucked in the card was a crisp new $100 bill. I was just floored. So I put it all into Miss Liberty, reasoning that I hadn't known about it, so therefore wouldn't miss it. I vaguely remember thanking her for it at the time, but of course it got packed up when we came home; then came the big flood in my apt. and all the moving of things to storage and up to Mum's place. Then I was laid off, so the rest was moved. In all of this, my short-term memory failed entirely, which has made for a lovely jackpot this week! . . . and a VERY happy Pot! And just when I thought I'd be scrambling to even put in the $20!

I do love that nest egg, partly 'cause it's green! I'm glad it won't be smashed to open it.
