About Me

My Photo
My blog is about our life after MORTGAGE FREEDOM (achieved Oct 2012), saving hard for TRAVEL EXPERIENCES and EARLY RETIREMENT from my job as a teacher. I also have an ULTIMATE LIFE LIST (which works like a Bucket List)of dream travel destinations and experiences. Please leave a comment if you can. I love reading them! A little about me! I am so grateful for the life I’ve been given. I don’t need ‘things’ to be happy. I appreciate my family, friends and the value of experiences over the materialistic. By respecting the power of money and using it wisely we have had a beautiful, simple wedding and bought a tiny cottage with some land overlooking fields. We try to live simply and appreciate the beauty of the nature around us. But we have an adventurous side too. I met Mr SFT whilst travelling in Cambodia. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR STOPPING BY!

READ A BOOK A MONTH CHALLENGE

MONTH 1-WILDFLOWER HILL BY KIMBERLEY FREEDMAN

STARTED JAN 19TH-THIS BOOK WAS 'LENT' TO ME BY A FRIEND AT SCHOOL. IT IS SO NICE THAT A FEW OF US EXCHANGE BOOKS WITH ONE ANOTHER.

Do you lend or borrow books?

HERE IS A BRIEF SUMMARY PLOT:

GLASGOW 1929, Beattie Blaxland dreamed of a life of fashion and fabrics. She never thought she would find herself pregnant by her married lover, just before her 19th birthday and be forced to leave home.

London, present day, Emma Blaxland-Hunter is living her dream as a prima ballerina-until the moment her career is ruin and she loses everything.

Separated by decades, both women must find the strength to rebuild their lives. A legacy from one to the other will lead to Wildflower Hill and a house that holds traumatic family secrets.

I'll let you know what I make of it!!!!!

MONTH 1-THE EVIL SEED BY JOANNE HARRIS

Brief Synopsis: It's never easy to face the fact that a man you once loved passionately has found the girl of this dreams, as Alice discovers when Joe introduces her to his new girlfriend Ginny. Jealous, Alice is repelled by Ginny-an ethereal beauty with a sinister group of friends.

Started on 1st January.

I have recently been very strict with my book buying. I have a tiny 'art deco' style bookcase in our dinning area. It is absolutely over-flowing with books that I have borrowed, been given or bought from book sales and charity shops.

So I shouldn't really be buying any more books really. Not unless they are on my wish list. Which this is. I'm a big fan of Joanne Harris. I've got most of her novels now. So it's a case of reading them. I have read:

Chocolat, The Lollipop Shoes (Sequel to Chocolat) and Peaches for Monsieur Le Cure (Sequel to The Lollipop Shoes), Coastliners and Gentlemen and Players.

I have on my book shelf others by Joanne Harris: Blue eyed Boy, Jigs and Wheels, Holy Fools. Five Quarters of the Orange has been lent out to a friend.

Anyway I digress, I bought this book: The Evil Seed at OXFAM charity shop in Penzance, which will make it a nice souvenir of our New Year trip.

I'll let you know what I make of it!

FINISHED ON JAN 19TH-Well this book was 'different' and made for someone with a strong constitution! It's very good but a bit gory. I would give it 7 out of 10

  1. I am trying to read more. I actually read a few books at a time which helps when there are parts that get slower. I read three books in December which was great (mostly due to travelling at Christmas - I read to pass the travelling time) but this month have yet to finish a book. My favorite current read is from my friend Happier Than A Billionaire, the sequel. I met the Author Nadine while I was in Costa Rica (before CNN interviewed her and her first book took off). Very funny reads. I also have two mysteries on the backburner. I think I spend too much time on the internet though or I would read more :)

    1. I have tried reading a few books at a time but found one 'takes over' so now read one at a time.

  2. I decided that I really needed to read more at the back end of last year so I joined a book club. I am really enjoying it. I am currently reading my way through the Wallander series xxx

  3. I used to read a lot before i started my studies and now i don't and it pains me. I have a lot of books that i have bought with the intention of reading but haven't gotten round to it. I might wait until my assignments are out of the way. My sister bought me a kindle summer 2011 and i haven't used it. I know i know. So my plan is to read the books in my house and not buy anymore then start using the kindle. I think this will be a better said than done scenario. I do prefer flipping the pages but will give it a go.

    1. Hi New World,

Studies take over don't they? I'm trying to read all the books in my house before I buy more. The odd exception may occur!

  4. I have hundreds of books in my living room and bedroom and although I've read most of them, somehow I can't seem to part with many of them!

I haven't bought many more in the past three years since I got my Kindle because I've also got hundreds of books on that too!

Currently I'm reading "How the Other Half Lives" by Jacob A Riis, his photographs are really descriptive. This book is in my bedroom.

On my Kindle I'm reading "A Game of Thrones"

Reading is one of my passions, coming before lots of things...like housework for instance!

  5. I generally do not lend books because it's too darn hard to get them back from most people!!

I'm trying to get 2 books read a month (I have an insanely fast reading speed) so it should not be all that difficult.

    1. Hi Teri,

Yes, you have to be careful don't you.

2 books a month is a good aim. I'm not sure I'll manage 2 this month.

  6. I've just finished reading Kate Morton's Forgotten Garden - loved it, largely set in Cornwall (that was just by chance, not why I chose it!) spanning three generations of a family, it untangles they mystery of the little girl who was abandoned on a ship bound for Australia. Sx
