About Me

My Photo
My blog is about our life after MORTGAGE FREEDOM (achieved Oct 2012), saving hard for TRAVEL EXPERIENCES and EARLY RETIREMENT from my job as a teacher. I also have an ULTIMATE LIFE LIST (which works like a Bucket List)of dream travel destinations and experiences. Please leave a comment if you can. I love reading them! A little about me! I am so grateful for the life I’ve been given. I don’t need ‘things’ to be happy. I appreciate my family, friends and the value of experiences over the materialistic. By respecting the power of money and using it wisely we have had a beautiful, simple wedding and bought a tiny cottage with some land overlooking fields. We try to live simply and appreciate the beauty of the nature around us. But we have an adventurous side too. I met Mr SFT whilst travelling in Cambodia. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR STOPPING BY!

WHAT IS SEALED POT SUNDAY?

PLEASE JOIN US FOR SEALED POT SUNDAY!!

Have you been emptying your purse each week into your pot?

Have you found a coin down the back of the sofa and fed your pot?

Have you been putting in all your £2 coins or Loonies or Gold Coins in?

Have you 'saved and not spent'-not having that coffee has meant more for the pot?

Please pop along EVERY SUNDAY and share your week with the other GLOBAL SEALED POT CHALLENGERS. It's a chance to get to know and support each other! Maybe pick up an idea or two? And keep the momentum going-we have 34 more weeks to go until we open our pots together.

CORNWALL DAY - MOUSEHOLE LIGHTS AND A DRIVE THROUGH THE CORNISH COUNTRYSIDE

One evening we drove a few mile from the hostel to see the MOUSEHOLE LIGHTS!
If you are interested in reading more http://www.mouseholelights.org.uk/About%20us

Each year they add a new display. I love the 3 ships, the whale, the cat and the Loch Ness Monster of course!

We supported the local fish and chip shop!

And wandered around the shops which were open. I loved this idea for a Christmas Tree!

Enjoying a drink at the Ship Inn. They celebrate the life of Tom Ballock here just before Christmas. He was a local hero of Mousehole who many years ago stopped the villagers starving to death! No one had been out fishing as it was a very stormy winter but brave Tom (who said it should be him who should go as he was old and had no family) set sail and brought back enough fish to save them. His entire catch was baked into STARGAZEY PIES to share!

Each year I read my class the children's story about Tom called THE MOUSEHOLE CAT. The illustrations are beautiful. Below you can see Tom, his cat and the harbour of Mousehole. The calm before the storm!

On our last day we drove to the North Coast of Cornwall.
We found a beautiful old Tin Min ruin. My Great Uncle Tommy was a Tin Miner. Such a dear gentle soul, who suffered greatly in old age from what he'd digested down the mines.

Here is the airport.
Flights from here take you to the Scilly Isles

You can see the Isles rung in red on this map. We would like to go in the Summer (see image below)

We drove to Pendeen Lighthouse. Here is the coastline next to the lighthouse

And here is the lighthouse. It's beautiful!

As you can see the light was fading.

Another Tin Mine ruin.

And here is the most idyllic farmhouse, I wish the sun was out for you to see it! All around were green rolling hills. See photo below!

I hope you enjoyed the photos!

  5. You really DO have to support the local chippy (and the village pubs) don't you when on holiday, it would be unfair not to!! :-)

Love the pictures and the explanation of Stargazy Pie.

    1. Hi MPB,

I agree, they do taste better.

The National Trust preserve some lovely buildings. We're actually staying in one which is a Youth Hostel when we go to Salcombe in March.

Love those Christmas lights. It's great how they've got the sail boats actually out on the water.

  20. A wonderful post. Having only fleetingly passed through Mousehole, I knew nothing about it, so I've learnt plenty here. I love the lights, will have to look in to those a bit more when we next visit, and I love the story of Tom Ballock. Isn't it lovely how they still celebrate his life? I loved seeing all the scenery in your photos, breathtaking.

  21. We went to The Isles of Scilly a couple of years ago. My own personal recommendation would be to camp if you possibly can or go to one of the B&B's as the journey is a long one for a day trip. The trip however, is well worth it. They are beautiful, white sands and silence-total bliss. :-)

  22. Have you ever been to the Isles of Scilly? They are truly beautiful, and I recommend a trip in May half term if you get a chance! My Mum has taken my sister and I a few times and it's always wonderful! :)

I love the Mousehole Cat! It was read to us at Primary school.

    1. Hi Bryallen,

No we've never been! Maybe one day we'll be able to go in May, but that's my busiest time at school, when I write reports :(

The Mousehole Cat is a classic!
