SEALED POT SUNDAY-WEEK 1-GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER!

Hi Everyone!

A big welcome to Jackie, Bonsaimum, Linnie, Lena and Connie. SO happy you are following my little blog. Hope you can leave a comment from time to time.

So it is the first 'Sealed Pot Sunday'....

A great way to support each other over the year ahead is by sharing our achievements for the week and 'getting to know each other' a bit.

So I will get the ball rolling....

My achievements this week have been:
I haven't spent much this week-just a visit to my favourite charity shop (1 restrained myself and only bought 1 book) and our local village shop, which I like to support. I have emptied the change from my purse into the sealed pot.

Next week I hope to:
Save the money I would have spent on chocolate and grazing snacks for my pot (save instead of spending approach).

Empty my purse at the end of the week.

I am doing the challenge because:
My hubby (Mr Sft) and I are keen to save money for a weekend break in Europe. He chose a photo of the Charles Bridge in Prague, Czech Republic (below) to decorate our sealed pot so that could be on our list of destinations...
We are both huge fans of getting out and about, seeing as much of this amazing world whilst we can so choosing a travel goal makes perfect sense for us.

Next week I hope to .......... save more money by not eating chocolate at work (2 days in the office). I also plan not to eat after dinner each night

    1. You've done really well Judy, that's a nice chunk of money in the pot! Must inspire you to find those grocery bargains too :)
I hope you do really well with your eating this week..You and I are very similar with our eating goals..now I've kicked my chocolate habit, I'll be putting £2 per week in the pot, so that will be over £100 in the pot from that alone. As for grazing that must amount to at least a £1 a week so that will be another £50 in the pot. Looking at it that way, you and I will be in a win-win situation-better health and loads going in the sealed pot too!
I will embellish your goal with the latest details, any ideas where you would like to go for that special weekend?

  3. This week I have not spent as much as usual, as both me and DH have been ill!
Next week I hope to save money by reducing portion sizes :)

    1. Hi Nic,
Sorry to hear you and DH have been poorly. I hope you are over the worst now.
I'm really interested in hearing how you are going to match saving money to reducing portion size? As reducing portion sizes will be another eating goal of mine..The more I think about it, the more I see how much there is to do! :) I would appreciate your advice.
I'm off to embellish your sealed pot goal..any ideas where you would like to go for your weekend away?

  4. I have decided that the money from my sealed pot has to go to replace the money I spent on the caravan last year and the new cooker, so when it is opened it will be going into the savings account, So far it has just been 5 p's and 1 p's in the pot, at the end of the month I will empty the change in my purse into the pot.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think you are making a sensible decision there. Your caravan was such a fantastic investment so it makes sense to pay back into your savings account. Every time I think of the freedom the caravan gives you I smile and sigh..it must feel amazing to just take off on another adventure. As for a cooker, well it a necessity.

I think anything in the pot gives a great feeling.

I know you will do really well on this challenge, you are so determined:)

  5. I haven't managed to find a pot that will survive this household. However I have put some coins aside. I am afraid that this week has cost me thousands. I had to pay a huge bill on behalf of my daughter and I paid for the Queen Mary trip. I am definitely going and while I was at it I bought my fare home.

So this week I am going to find some sort of savings vessel and empty my change in it when I have it. Then I need to replace all I have spent so I am going to try to transfer $100 each week into my savings account. I made this decision as I handed over the said thousands on Friday.

Henceforth the Bank of Mum is closed as the kids are a bit to easy on thinking mum will provide.

Next week I hope ... to bank my sealed pot money ready for our little christmas treat.
I am doing this challenge because in the hurly burly of Christmas we don't get to spend quality time together. This is a perfect way to set aside some money especially for this, it's such a good idea!

  9. This past week as been busy one for me. Only a few coins in the pot, however, I did save in other ways.
Monday and Wednesday volunteer work at our local Christmas Care, which gives hampers of food and toys to needy families. C.C. provides lunch for its helpers, so I saved by not making these two lunch meals at home.
Friday took my Mum for her six month Dr. check-up, she bought me lunch, bless her, and my youngest daughter invited me for dinner on Friday and then took me Christmas shopping with her, no dinner to make and no fuel used in my car, and did not find anything to complete my Christmas shopping, so no money spent. Did not eat at home very often this week, so no grocery shopping needed. Putting this $'s saving towards Christmas meal, as I will have 18 family members home for dinner.
My S. Africa trip put a big dent in my savings account, so I am going to build it up by doing the same as I did previous to my trip. At the end of the month, deposit a dollar amount from my chequing to my savings account. ie: chequing balance $5,281.47, I will deposit the last three numbers of dollars ($281.00) into my savings account.
Have yet to decide what to use my sealed pot for.

  11. We have changed our sealed pot goal from travelling to Christmas 2013 fund. The reason - self employment means December is one of our lowest money in months based on what we do - and highest outgoing funds because of Christmas. We also buy gifts for four kids, three nephews, two Mothers and each other so we have a lot of people we buy for. The pot has been decorated (with travel shots but I am not redecorating it). A few toonies ($2 Canadian coins) have been tossed in there to get it started. I really hope to put actual Money bills in there in the New Year as want less financial pressure next Christmas.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I will change that on the list CC!

Mr Sft is self employed and Dec is his lowest money month too, so I totally understand what you are saying.

Well done on tossing some toonies in the sealed pot this week.

I'm looking forward to putting some notes in mine too.

  12. This week was a huge bonus for my pot,I got to put about $105 dollars in it!!!! money was paid back to me that I lent to someone and it was unexpected that she gave it to me,so as i had managed without it I quickly put it in..my hand was trying to pull back but I was too quick lol..this will be a one off ..
This week I am hoping to put 50c a day till Thursday shopping day for me,I empty out my purse before I go as it is also pay day and that way I start fresh each week.
Our plan is to have the second UK fare in the pot 2013,2012 held about 1 1/2 fares so it was just thrilling.
We are "potting "for a 2014 UK Europe trip, but some news that I have to have some surgery pretty quickly but cannot have time off work at this point I shall be having it as soon as we retire then the trip.I am praying that the doctor can keep things on an even keel till then otherwise we are in big trouble.Anyway thats a grumble not news.
So wonderful to see so many "go potty".

    Replies
    1. That is an amazing amount Carole! Wow! As you say, you had managed without it. You were so good putting it in the pot.
I bet you are looking forward to emptying your purse on Thursday. I will be paying myself £3 per week for not eating any chocolate or grazing in the evening.
Keeping your eyes on the prize is what it is all about...you have done so well saving for the first air fare, but now must focus on the 2nd. I know you will do it. Does Bob has his own pot again?
I'll add the 2014 UK EUROPE TRIP to the list, I thought that was your goal.
Sorry to hear about your surgery news, I will be praying for you to keep going until you both retire. Then you can get the surgery done before enjoying your dream trip.

I LOVE IT THAT SO MANY ARE 'GOING POTTY' THIS YEAR!

  13. I have to thank you for keeping the inspiration going with the sealed pot challenge this year - ours is going on a weekend in London. This week I am searching for cheapest train fares from gatwick into London return over a weekend plus a London travelcard for the weekend itself - so far it looks like if I buy a disabled rail card (I am deaf so qualify) then we could get the basic train fares for £50 odd but I am still checking on this plus £20 extra for the inner london travelcard for a single day - it's very hard to decipher the fare structure and any help would be gratefully received. I think next year we are going to do the challenge again - am just thinking at the mo about the target.

    1. Oh Betty, I hope you have a wonderful time in London. Looking forward to hearing all about it.
I hope the innercity travelcard is for the 2 or 4 of you. That sounds far too much otherwise. I do hope you get a good deal, but I appreciate what a minefield it can be.
So pleased you are joining us again. Let me know when you've decided on the target.

As a teacher, my term time has busy periods, so having SEALED POT SUNDAY will help me lead the challenge and everyone can come together, share dreams, progress and spur each other on.

  14. Sounds like everyone is doing really well!

We started with a tenner, then I found an old tub with savings from some years ago - it contained £14, so that's now in the pot. Sime wanted to buy a second hand Norwegian travel book from our local library, but I persuaded him against it & he put in the £1 saved! Then last night, he managed to wangle free drinks for me at his band's gig, so I stuck a fiver in. Today, while out walking we found 5p... Great fun!

  16. This week I've added another 20% of my ebay sales to my virtual sealed pot. It was a good amount thanks to my Mum generously giving me a lot of lovely things to sell, and to parting with some of my collection of old linen. Next week I hope to round down the bank accounts and put the odd amounts into the 'sealed pot', and empty my purse of 1p,2p and 5p coins - they'll go into last year's actual sealed pot that I didn't open.I'm doing this challenge because J and I never had a honeymoon due to a lack of money, because being married to the complete and absolute love of my life for 30 years will definitely be worth celebrating, and because I want to surprise him.

  17. This week I have achieved plenty, biggest of all for me was to get back to the vege garden and plant some more seeds including the carrots that I thought my husband had already planted! So no new carrots from our garden for Christmas this year.
Next week I am going to knock off as much Christmas Shopping as possible - starting to feel like it's all a bit last minute now - write some Christmas mail, have my MIL to dinner/tea (I don't know what you call the evening meal, either means that here) for her birthday, do some accounts for the school stationery shop.
I am doing this challenge as it's a good way to stash a bit of cash away for a rainy day and it's fun to know that I have a secret little stash.

I am SO impressed by everyone and the amount they managed to save.

I fell by the wayside last year I'm afraid when we needed some quick cash - not a lot but it had to be cash and it was all we had.

So, could you add me to the sealed pot list for 2012/3 please?

I'm going to save all the €1 and €2 coins I find. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet though, but I'm sure after a little think, I'll come up with something!

  23. Hi SFT, my White Island Trip is booked in for February. Can't wait. This years sealed pot challenge will be a trip to Abel Tasman National Park.

    1. Hi Matt-I am DELIGHTED that your WHITE ISLAND TRIP IS BOOKED FOR FEBRUARY! I will look it up, I'm sure it's another wonderful location.

We went to the ABEL TASMAN NATIONAL PARK when we went to NZ a few years ago and LOVED IT! Just beautiful. If we went back we'd definitely do more hiking around its trails.

Prague is beautiful. My first visit was just as it was coming out of communisim. There were no hotels or hostels. We simply met Ivan at the station and went to stay with him and his mother in their house. It was a wonderful experience.

After that one of my best friends lived there for a number of years. Infact he busked on the Charles Bridge each day and taught English. So we coached over Europe to Prague, £64 return in those days, and stayed with him. A really cheap holiday! Times were changing fast-Dunkin Doughnuts and MacDonalds had arrived!

So I would be really interested to go back. Mr Sft has never been but I know he would love it too.

  24. What a brilliant start to this years challenge, thank you Sft for running it and keeping us all focused, everyone is so optimistic and 'up for it', lets keep the momentum going with lots of inspiration from each other.

This week I have - Decided that as we are spending our £2 coins saved this year on housekeeping for next year, at the end of every week we will put all our lower denomination coins (those of 50p or under) that are left over into the sealed pot, and start each week afresh with any left over £1 coins and £2 coins if needed. Lovely Hubby is also emptying his pockets and change tub into the sealed pot at the end of each week all year.

Next week I hope to - tip all our left over cash into the pot AND for the rest of December any £2 coins WILL be going into the pot (we are in the habit, it's a shame to break it for the last couple of weeks of the year) and I seem to be gettig quite a few in change at the moment.

I am doing the Challenge because - after what could be a Challenging year with only £480 for houusekeeping for the WHOLE YEAR we will be needing a 'little splurge' at Christmas and this will be our Christmas 2013 spending money.

Good luck to everyone who is doing this challenge and thanks again Sft for masterminding it.

    1. Of course you can join, that's great!

I think a fund for Christmas 2013 is a fantastic goal!

Spoil yourself with a few little luxuries.

  26. Ooh, can I join this too? I'm going to save for a holiday - not sure where though. I'm torn between Japan, San Fransisco and New York. Doubt my pot would hold enough to take me to all 3!!!! xxx

    1. That's an amazing goal Lonestarsky! You know me, I love travel related goals-Japan would be my favourite of those 3! Wouldn't it be nice if you could save enough for all three.

    1. Well done on your low spending Welsh Poppy! And putting all that lovely left over extra money in the pot!
And good luck for this week-sounds like you are going to do really well.
Lovely to hear that another person is going to Prague (we are considering it). It is magical, isn't it? And we all grab opportunities when we can.

  29. Hi all!
    Sorry I'm late!
It's been a hectic weekend for me!
And I finally blogged about my sealed pot!
SFT, you're going you like this!

    http://www.blog.pingerrain.com/2012/12/sealed-pot-sunday-post-1.html

Readers, I will also appreciate if you could stop by my blog to give me some comments or follow me too! I write mostly on travel and lifestyle~

    Anyway, to your questions:
    1. This week I have achieved...
Stash a $10 bill into my pot for good luck~
Shaved $5 a month off my mobile and home internet broadband bill!

    2. Next week you hope to... (let's get focused!)
Realised my broadband contract is up, may change a plan to reduce more expenses = more money into my sealed pot!

    3. I am doing this challenge because...
To enjoy and learn to have fun saving!!
This may sound weird, but I never have cultivated the habit for saving in my younger days, so I'm soooo starting now!!

    Have a great week!
    xoxo
    Priscilla.

    1. I will pop over to your blog in a moment Priscilla.

Congratulations on your achievements! Are you going to put the $5 Internet saving in there too?

What other expenses have you managed to reduce?

Yes, I agree, making saving fun is the way to go.
I was a terrible spender when I was young so I still feel the novelty.

      Have a great week too!

    2. Hi SFT,
I haven't put that $5 in, cause it's starting from Jan because of the Bill cycle.
I will save another $50 from my internet bill based on plan change; and another $60 when I have terminated my cable tv since I'm so busy nowadays to even watch tv.
So, if all goes to plan, I will save about $115 every month.
And in mid year next year after I finish paying my credit loan, I will have roughly another $300 extra each month.
      All fingers cross!

      Priscilla.

  30. Another €3 in the pot. Still not sure what I'll put the money towards, but possibly to a long awaited visit to UK to see family and friends.
