About Me

My Photo
My blog is about our life after MORTGAGE FREEDOM (achieved Oct 2012), saving hard for TRAVEL EXPERIENCES and EARLY RETIREMENT from my job as a teacher. I also have an ULTIMATE LIFE LIST (which works like a Bucket List)of dream travel destinations and experiences. Please leave a comment if you can. I love reading them! A little about me! I am so grateful for the life I’ve been given. I don’t need ‘things’ to be happy. I appreciate my family, friends and the value of experiences over the materialistic. By respecting the power of money and using it wisely we have had a beautiful, simple wedding and bought a tiny cottage with some land overlooking fields. We try to live simply and appreciate the beauty of the nature around us. But we have an adventurous side too. I met Mr SFT whilst travelling in Cambodia. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR STOPPING BY!

Thank you for your comments about yesterday's post:

Kitchenbunny: Random surprise gifts are wonderful aren't they! The lemon curd sounds delicious.

Theanne: Our neighbours are sooooo kind. We are so lucky. They have numerous apple trees and always put their windfalls out for people to help themselves to. We live on a county footpath and I often see a hungry walker pick one up as they pass.

Jane and Chris: Your fruit bush plan makes perfect sense. I so wish more people could think like that and embrace sharing. Would love the recipe for the tofu, leek and lemon pie, that sounds delicious.

MabelandMaisy: We adore leek soup too! And the weather is just right at the moment. Hope the advice above helps you get a progress bar. I love them and am quite addicted! Congrats on the £30 start to your challenge.

The Smiths: Isn't it wonderful that the food left from the holiday lets doesn't just get thrown away? We are so against waste like that. Years ago we stayed in a Youth Hostel at New Year. The following day everyone left apart from us and we found bags of unopened food chucked in the kitchen bin. This may sound repulsive but we had that out SOOOOO quick! :)

Sandra: Sounds like you've had some lovely unexpected gifts from neighbours and friends..Good luck with the ebaying. I hope the progress bar works for you.

Mary: Isn't it interesting that leeks are so expensive in USA and Canada (see Jane and Chris comment). Do you know the reason why? Hope the frig is all settled into its new home. I too would have wanted someone with me at delivery and then like you I set up camp almongst the wild animals of Africa!

Carla: Our neighbours are sooo generous. And such nice people too.

Fran: Lovely to hear from you! So glad you are joining the challenge. Sounds like a few of us will be ebaying this week :) Good news about the tuition money too.

Sue15cat: We are so pleased when we can help our neighbours with computer/camera/technical problems as they are so sufficient in everything else. Good luck with your challenge. You did really well last year.

Suze: So pleased to hear you will grab the opportunity. That's what life is all about!

Jo: Mr Sft grows leeks too! Such a great vegetable! Good luck with yours. We are so lucky to have 6 free range eggs for 70p and they are so beautiful. Cost almost twice that in some shops.

Mrs Thrifty: So glad you're up for both challenges!
Tonight I had a pastel blue boiled egg with a golden yolk in my Greengage egg cup-which is blue and white horizontal stripes! It just looked perfect.
Really trying with the healthier eating this week. But as you can seen I do have a little treat each day :0

Wean: Sounds like you are off to a brilliant start already! Hope the ebaying goes really well. I've joined your blog too!

  1. I think I had better look into this one lol as I usually give everything away,Bob is always saying I should have sold things so maybe that is something I have to try to organise..I will look at it this weekend as my cupboards are bulging with old china etc.I will write myself a note lol.

  2. Evening! Fitting in the 5 a day can be a bit of a chore for myself, not so much for DH. He takes an apple and a banana for work, then there are usually at least a portion each of onions and mushrooms in tea, and we snack on mixed dried fruit. We have access to a fruit box at work as part of a social responsibility policy, but I have to be quick to get the good stuff!

I love how positive you are. :)

  4. Sneak them in! I start with lemon water (just a slice or a squeeze) weekday mornings before breakfast. If it's porridge then i put in dried fruits like sultanas or apricots or dates. Our company also has a fruit bowl which is an incentive to get there a little early and get one of your 5 a day for free :)

Around 11am or 3pm I try to have a fruit break (where i eat some cut up fruit).

Lunch is normally soup or salad which is mostly made out of veg.

Then with dinner, anything else is a bonus. I often grate veg into other things - e.g. omelettes iwth grated carrot, shavings of broccolli or courgettes.

Loving the blog and feeling very inspired to make my savings and travel intentions public so as to keep me on track :)

  5. I love the idea of the money on the side challenge - I am definitely going to join in. I have a box of stuff for Ebay but have not got round to putting it on - perhaps this will be the inspiration. x

  6. Received $35.00 when quilted table topper was picked up this a.m. so I am half way there and it's only May 1st.
I usually count my beakfast orange juice as a fruit, so I did get all of mine in today, one extra as a snack in front of TV tonight will be a plumb.
Neighbour gave me a big armfull of rhubarb this afternoon. Some for a crumble and some for the freezer.

  7. You are doing great with your food! I don't always get in the 5+ a day. I'm not a natural fruit eater, but I love veges which we have most days. Know what you mean about the processed meats, they are bad, but they are so darn tasty too! Everything in moderation.....
Thanks for the side bar tips :)

  8. I have no trouble eating fruit and veges. Sometimes I wonder if I eat too much of them. My dinner plate is always loaded with veges and it's nothing for me to have eight or nine different veges on my plate.
Your new challenge sounds interesting and I think I'll consider joining as I have plenty to sell on Ebay after my decluttering.
This month I'm eating out of my pantry fridge and freezer. I'm allowing $320 for the month in food. I'm due to do a fortnightly shop this week and I'm thinking of making do and only picking up what I absolutely need. Sue

  9. we made some fish that had been in the freezer too long today - ugh - I couldn't eat mine but hubby did. Thank goodness I made a big salad and rice to go with it. FAIL. Good luck on your ebay items.

  10. I can't possibly do that 'techno' stuff yet re a progress bar, I'm setting up a stand alone page for it.

  11. You're doing really well with getting your five a day in. An easy one is a glass of orange juice, then we have at least two veg, usually three with dinner, and a piece of fruit usually finishes it off.

  12. Thank you lady, I know where I was going wrong now! I may well end up with a few x

  13. We probably eat more like 10 a day being vegan... We eat lots of fruit in the morning with our porridge for brekkie & then more fruit mid morning. Lunch is usually a large salad & dinner loads more veggies!

We're also happy to take unopened food from bins... Freegans do it all the time!

    Kay :)
